“You are afraid of so many things. One more doesn’t matter.”

Fear was something that somehow lived inside me, though I wasn’t fully aware of its presence. For years, it quietly shaped my thoughts and choices without me even realizing how much it influenced my life. But eventually, I reached a point where I knew I needed to make a change. So, I went to see a therapist to finally confront it.

When I told her how much it affects my life, she suggested I try something called family constellation. Without hesitation, I replied, “That scares me.”

Her response was simple, but it hit me in a way I didn’t expect:
“You’re afraid of so many things. One more doesn’t matter.”

In that moment, I realized she was absolutely right. Fear had been a constant in my life for so long, so what was one more fear in the grand scheme of things? If I wanted change, I had to take the leap and face it, no matter how uncomfortable it felt.

That day came when I found myself at my first family constellation, and it was unlike anything I had experienced before. My therapist chose a young girl to “represent” my fear and asked her to stand directly in front of me. The second I looked into her eyes, my heart started racing. (In family constellations, a representation means using people to symbolically stand in for emotions, family members, or energies, allowing you to see and experience patterns that are often hidden from view).

My mind was telling me to look away, to reject what I was seeing, but something inside me couldn’t. I felt an almost magnetic pull toward her. It was as if she was a part of me, and I couldn’t just walk away from her, no matter how much my mind told me to.

Then, someone else was chosen to represent my great-grandmother, and that’s when everything shifted. The girl representing my fear immediately turned toward her.

My therapist explained that my great-grandmother had experienced something deeply traumatic that left her with a profound fear, and that fear had been passed down through the generations. In that moment, I understood that the fear I carried wasn’t just mine — it was part of my family’s history.

But what struck me most was the sense of compassion I felt. I saw my great-grandmother’s fear, but I also saw her strength. I understood that she had lived with this fear, yet somehow survived it. And in that moment, I felt like I was honoring her by confronting the fear that had been passed down to me.

That session — that moment — marked a profound shift in my life. It was the beginning of a journey that has led to deeper understanding and healing.

It’s been two decades since that day, and I no longer carry that fear. What began as an intense, scary moment has transformed into an ongoing journey of growth, healing, and self-discovery. The family constellation opened a door to understanding myself on a deeper level, and through it, I found a strength and clarity I never knew I had.

I’m sharing this because I believe we all have the power to break through the blocks that hold us back. Whether it’s fear, limiting beliefs, or past experiences, these unseen barriers quietly shape our lives. But when we take the journey inward to understand and release them, everything can change.
